bakirtzis

Anastasios Bakirtzis was born in Serres, Greece in 1956.  He received the diploma of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University, Athens, Greece, in 1979 and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.  in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

In 1984, he was a Consultant to Southern Company, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Since 1986, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece, where he is currently a Professor.

He is head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of AUTh.  From 1999 to 2004 he was Deputy Chairman of the Department of Energy Resource Management of AUTh.  From 1997 to 1999, as well as from 2008 to 2010 he was head of the Division of Electric Energy of the ECE Department of AUTh. From 2006 to 2010, as well as from 2016 to 2019 he was director of the Power Systems Laboratory of the ECE Department of AUTh.

His research interests are:

  • Power System Operation, Planning and Economics
  • Electricity Markets
  • Optimization Theory Applications to Power Systems
  • Intelligent System Applications to Power Systems
  • Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Generation

He has authored a book on power system economic operation (in Greek) and more than 200 technical papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings. He is member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, and the IET Renewable Power Generation.  From 2008 till 2013 he served as member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems.  From 2013 till 2020 he served as member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy (Springer).

Professor Bakirtzis is Fellow of IEEE, member of CIGRE and member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
